Desert Empire Insurance Services (DEI) traces its roots back to 1925 with the Sparey-Holt Agency in Indio, CA. The agency was purchased in 1956, becoming Harry Holt & Company. A.J. Sfingi & Associates, which was founded in 1962, merged with Harry Holt & Co. dba: Lewis & Hannon Insurance to form Sfingi & Hannon Insurance in 1986.
On June 1, 1993, Sfingi & Hannon Insurance Services became a part of Hilb, Rogal and Hamilton Company. Later that same year, Curtis Kieley, Inc, of Palm Springs joined Sfingi & Hannon in a merger of two of the Coachella Valley’s oldest and largest insurance agencies.
In April of 2006, we returned to our locally owned agency roots, forming Desert Empire Insurance Services with many employees who have been with us over twenty years.
The agency principals, Matt Costello, Paul Lewis, Sal Sandoval and Van Tanner have all been with our agency system throughout our evolution. Paul and Van were principals of Sfingi & Hannon from 1986 to 1993.
Today
While our ownership has changed, our dedication of service to our clients has not. The same insurance professionals our clients have come to rely on over the years are still here making sure that our commitment to quality, value and service motivates us today as it has since 1925. Our staff of 34 highly qualified employees, offering in some cases more than 35 years of expertise, has earned us a reputation of a widely respected risk management and insurance organization.
