It’s National Emergency Preparedness Month!

National Emergency Preparedness MonthSeptember is here and it is National Emergency Preparedness Month! During this time, thousands of organizations join forces to educate Americans of the importance of being prepared for all possible perils. Natural disasters that are native to California typically lack fair warning, stressing the importance of every California resident being prepared. When we are prepared for disasters with family plans and stocked disaster kits, we can better react and recover from a disaster. Gathered are some informative tips for you to keep in mind:

  • More often than not, families assume that they are prepared because the head of the household has formulated a disaster preparedness plan. However, if every member of your family is not knowledgeable and in understanding of the plan, it will fall through. Be sure to have regular family meetings and disaster drills so that you can feel confident that everyone is prepared.
  • If you have recently moved into a new neighborhood, it is important that you find out their particular method of warning households. Some neighborhoods will call directly, whereas others will sound an alarm. It is important that you know which to look out for.
  • Now is the perfect time to take a look at your disaster kit and see what needs to be replaced or stocked. You should have enough nonperishable foods and water for each member in your household for at least 3 days. Additionally you will want to have a battery operated radio, a sufficient amount of batteries, extra clothes, a first aid kit, and flashlights.
