Stay Alert to the Risks of Drowsy Driving

One hundred thousand preventable accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that’s how many crashes are caused by drowsy or sleepy driving each year.

Preventing drowsy or distracted driving accidents takes more than getting a good night’s sleep. Complex factors can be involved, including drivers who:

  • drive long distances to make a living
  • work night shifts
  • take medications that cause drowsiness
  • have health issues that make them sleepy

Here are some safe driving tips any driver can take if they are at risk of drowsy driving.

1. Get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. The amount of sleep adults need varies. If you find you’re drowsy during the day, try extending your sleep hours.

2. Look for alerts or alarms that you can install in your car. These alert a periodic sound if the computer detects a change in driving style or weaving.

3. Consider a phone app that periodically emits a loud sound to keep drivers alert.

4. If you have shift work that requires you to work nights, make sure you keep consistent sleep hours during the day. Try to keep your sleeping area as dark and quiet as possible.

5. See a doctor if you continue to feel sleepy during the day or while driving. Some treatable disorders, such as sleep apnea, can cause this.
